The 2025 Space Awards
And just like that, 2025 is wrapping up. While most of us were busy shouting 6 7, the people in the lab coats were busy uncovering secrets of the universe.
I've spent the year tracking the biggest headlines, and honestly? Space is getting weirder (and cooler) day by day. To wrap up my 2025 recap, I'm handing out four very official-sounding awards to the cosmic events that defined my year.
So here comes the Annual Space Awards Ceremony:
Clears throat.....
So, Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Annual Space Awards Ceremony. Tonight I will be handing out the 4 awards.
After a very unscientific but enthusiastic examination of the cosmic events, the jury has finally concluded the winner.
Here are the awards....
1. The Beauty Queen Award
The Winner: The "Christmas Tree" Cluster (Westerlund 1)
This award goes to the most stunning thing we saw through a telescope this year. James Webb gave us a look at Westerlund 1, and it’s basically a glitter factory 12,000 light-years away.
2. The Cosmic Monster Award
The Winner: The "Shapeshifting" Galaxy (Virgil)
sorry, I couldn't upload a picture of this because the black hole ate the camera.
This award is for the most "science-fiction-becomes-real" moment. Astronomers watched a quiet, boring galaxy suddenly wake up and start "eating" everything around it because of a hungry black hole at its center.
3. The Techie Award
The Winner: SpaceX’s "Chopstick" Rocket Catch
| the epic catch |
This goes to the most impressive piece of human engineering. If you haven't seen the video of a 20-story rocket being caught mid-air by a giant metal tower called Mechazilla, you need to stop reading this and go find it.
And.... now it's time for the mega award, the most prestigious cosmic award in the entire universe.
The Mega Award: The Astroscar 🏆
The Winner: Finding "Easy" Water on Mars
| this is the area |
This is the big one. The Astroscar goes to the discovery that actually changes the game for humanity. This year, we found out there is a massive amount of water ice just beneath the surface of Mars in a spot where it’s actually easy to land. For the first time, Mars felt less like a red dot in the sky and more like a future waiting patiently.
And with that I conclude the Annual Space Awards Ceremony.
That’s a Wrap on 2025!
It’s been a wild year of looking up. Whether it was a rocket being caught by chopsticks or a galaxy having a mid-life crisis, the sky never failed to keep things interesting.
I want to know: If you could win an "Astroscar" for something you did this year, what would it be? (Mine would be for finally learning how to make a game).
By the way, if you haven't read my blog where I list the top 10 cosmic events of 2025, you can visit it here.
And With That, The 2025 Season Comes To An END...
Good Night.
